What is a good moderately-price hotel to stay at in Napa Valley or near the area?
My bf and I have finally settled on going to Napa for vacation in August. We just are looking for a moderately priced hotel to stay (under $200). We are looking at Gaia. Is it too far outside Napa? Any other suggestions?
How far are Napa and Sonoma away from each other? Where are most of the vineyards? We are looking at Sterling, Beringer and doing the wine train tour. Are there any beaches nearby? We are flying in to San Fransico. Is 5 days/4 nights too long?
We plan on doing the wine tasting tours and vineyards; we’d like spend some time at a spa. So any advice or suggestions on hotels/things to do would be greatly appreciated.
Wife and I stayed at the Jack London Lodge in Sonoma (Glen Ellen) last July. Reasonably priced for the area. Previously we stayed at Holiday Inn Express in Santa Rosa and Holiday Inn Express Sebastopol.
The drive from Sonoma to Napa is 30 – 45 minutes depending on the route you take. It’s helpful to have a GPS but a set of maps from Google Maps will do just as well. Be aware that some of the routes between the valleys come through mountains and are narrow, twisty roads.
There are wineries in both Sonoma and Napa Valleys. More in Napa, but they are also more ‘commercial’ – more crowded, more expensive tastings, and more ostentatious (approaching Disney Land artificiality in some cases).
The Wine Train is nice – we did it at noon, and it pretty much filled the day. Our favorite wineries include Chateau St. Jean (Kenwood); Chateau Monteleone, Calistoga; Clos Pegase, Calistoga; Castelo di Amorosa, St. Helena; and Rutherford Hill, Rutherford But some of the smaller, less popular wineries are just as good and much less crowded.
There are beaches but they are a couple of hours away. Be aware that the water is cold!
You have more than enough time – actually, my wife and I tend to only allow a couple of days in wine country, spending the rest of our week in the Bay area doing things in San Francisco and some of the peninsula towns.
