How Grow Grapes

Growing Grapes Trellis Style
The trellis plays a very important role in grape growing. By their very nature, grapes are sturdy plants; however, they need all the support that they can get. Thus, growing grapes trellis style is the most convenient way to get that support. Unlike growing grapes on an arbor, the trellis design will yield more fruits.
In most cases, grape vines are not able to bear very much fruit if they are on the ground. That is where growing grapes trellis style comes in. The trellis can be made in any size you need. Thus, even a small vacant space in your backyard will be enough to grow grapes on a trellis. The trellis will keep the vines off the ground and more shoots will grow which will produce more fruits as well.
Growing grapes on a trellis and growing grapes on an arbor work similarly in so far as grape growing is concerned. However, if what you have is just a very small area, arbors become a more viable option. They can use minimal space and they are can also be very decorative. When properly trimmed, the vines can be trained to create a canopy over the arbor. Meanwhile, a trellis usually will require a larger area.
There are many types of trellis that can be used for different plantings. For instance a grape arbor is used more for decoration as the vines are pruned and trained to grow around the structure. Arbors are mostly used in home gardening. On the other hand a large trellis is more functional, such as the ones that are used in vineyards. Looks are not necessarily important but functionality is. A trellis must be strong enough to support the vines and aid in producing more fruits.
The height of the trellis also depends on the purpose for which it will be used. Growing grapes on a trellis, which are built taller, is ideal for use in warmer climates. However, the growing grapes on an arbor would be built lower than the trellis and is best for growing in colder places.
The structure for growing grapes on an arbor or trellis can be constructed using different materials. The most common of which are iron, PVC pipes, aluminum, wood or steel. Styles also vary. Everything is dependent on the type of grapes that will be grown.
Trellis work is composed of posts and wires. The post is very essential in providing the main support for the trellis. The posts must be anchored deep into the ground to provide adequate support. They should be placed about eight feet apart. You will need to attach two rows of steel wire between the posts. One wire should run along the bottom of the posts, about three inches off of the ground. The next row will run along the top of the posts. A staple gun can be used to secure the wires.
It is advised that when growing grapes on a trellis, the structure has to be constructed first, prior to the actual grape growing or planting.
Once you have completed the actual planting, the shoots will start growing. Look for the sturdier shoots and attach them to the trellis with a cloth or rope. Check on the vines and water them regularly. Proper cared will bring about a better harvest.
