Fun Tips to Help you Design Wine Labels!

Making wine at home is a fun and rewarding hobby that many people are getting in to these days. Whither your making wine for fun, profit or for gifts you’ll need superb and unique wine labels to set your wine apart from everyone else’s! Think about when you look for wine at the store, it’s often the most ornate or eye catching label that garner’s your interest. Aside from that, all the information you have to go on when selecting a new wine is the label itself! So if you’re having trouble designing your own personal wine labels you may want to try giving these tips a shot!

Consider Other Labels

When you design wine labels you probably think that in order to make them unique you shouldn’t look at other people’s work. Wrong! If art and design taught me anything it is that you actually stifle your own creativity by constraining your inspiration and sources! You should never be afraid to look at other people’s work to get ideas and borrow what you like to give your own unique twist on!

If you’ve ever played Pictionary you know how hard it is trying to make something from memory. So browse for resources online and gather together some wine labels you like the design of for inspiration. This is invaluable especially if you want to make a label that has the same information store bought wines have for added authenticity. You can’t add information you don’t know you need!

Think Different!

Seems pretty obvious huh? When trying to think about what design or name you want to give your homemade wine think about drawing from something a bit different than the usual. ‘So and So’s Red Wine’ isn’t exactly the most catchy (although it will certainly be the most straightforward!) For an extra personal touch think about a funny story from your life and try and pull a name from it, especially if it’s a gift for a family member you know really well! It’s sure to make the gift that much more meaningful if the unique wine labels bring a shared story to mind!

What About Design?

There’s a reason why designers are paid so much! Before you start slapping all kinds of different fonts and pictures on the label remember to keep it simple! Remove the images and just look at the text you’re putting on the label. Is it all necessary? Do you have multiple different font types? Is the font easy to read? Nothing is more aggravating than when you have difficulty reading something because of a poor font choice or a cluttered label! You should really only ever use a maximum of three fonts and make sure that they’re legible!

Once you have all of the necessary information, you’ll also want to try rearranging it a few times. It’s pretty rare that the very first thing you put down is going to be the end all design. So try a few different things out and pick from the best!

If you keep these in mind than you’re sure to come up with awesome unique wine labels for your home made wine. And if you start to feel a little stuck again, don’t be afraid to ask other people’s opinions or for ideas! This can really help you fine tune or get on the right track towards great design!
