Fast Growing Grape Vine
What vines on north side of house?
I built 3 trelles across the front of my house. What would be a good fast growing perrenial vine for the north side of my house. I’d like something that flowers or even bears fruit. Would a grape vine be good on the north side of a house. I live in central Canada (Saskatchewan) Thanks
The north side of a house doesn’t get any direct sun, but if there are no trees overhanging the area you are still getting bright light. Grapes are not good for a northern exposure. They need plenty of sun and most are only hardy to -15ยบ which mean zone 5. According to the map in the 2nd link below you are in zone 3.
The last links below are to sites listing vines hardy in very northerly zones. Still, your north facing site may have a micro climate zone colder than the overall zone wherein you live. Consult with neighbors, local garden clubs, and local nurseries about the most successful vines for your area.
